“can intimacy exist in public?”

secretcommunity550

Secret communities tested in aleatory fashion, Acconci’s limitations are practical, too. Beginning at the site of the Bundesnachrichtendienst and arriving at the Auswaertiges Amt:

The subject was chosen walking past the site of the German Secret Service building (to be finished in 2012). A plywood construction blockade, there is hardly any graffiti here. One stencil of a walking man whose head is a surveillance camera.

[14:06] The subject has been spotted on Chausseestrasse walking south at a medium pace and smoking a cigarette with his right hand.

Getting on the U-bahn, Schwarzkopfstrasse.

Stadtmitte, getting off.
Walking south on Friedrichstrasse, turning left on Krausenstrasse.

[14:16] Subject is noted to always look both ways before crossing the street.

Taking a left and turning into park.

[14:21] Subject missing.

[14:22] Subject 1 has most likely entered building number 40 at Leipzigerstrasse, and subject 2 is picked up at the point of departure, exiting from the building wearing high-heeled boots, blonde hair, carrying a black shopping bag in her right hand. She suddenly turns and walks the other direction. [14:26] Subject number 2 enters a jade coloured BMW 725i. We return to the point of departure of Subject 1. 40 Leipzigerstrasse. [14:28] Subject number 3 exits 40 Leipzigerstrasse. She walks east, wearing a multi-coloured scarf and black hat. Walking at leisurely pace, adjusting her hat.
[14:37] After playing Lotto, subject walks into the adjacent super market.

Blumenkohl, broccoli, kiwi.

[14:50] Subject 3 investigation is terminated in supermarket. Subject 4 recognised at 14:49 walking out of the market, carrying a large bottle of Pepsi.
[14:51] Walked inside Multipolster furniture store a few doors down. Appears to be working there.

[14:53] Subject 5 spotted walking west on Leipzigerstrasse. Subject 3 rediscovered walking west on Leipzigerstrasse. She is carrying groceries in a black nylon bag. Subject 3 investigation re-terminated.

Leipzigerstrasse 43. Subject 6 is spotted buying a small potted plant from the Blumen & Pflanzen shoppe. He wears a beige trenchcoat and red scarf, carrying a white and blue shopping bag and newly purchased flowers. [14:59] Subject meets a couple at the intersection of Leipzigerstrasse and Markgrafenstrasse. They all hold shopping bags and chat for a moment before trying to enter a restaurant door, finding it locked. The go to the next eingang and enter City Hotel.

[15:15] Subject 6 exits hotel accompanied by the same man and woman. He is no longer carrying the flowers and shopping bag. They walk north on Markgrafenstrasse. [15:23] Subject 6, accompanied by the couple, walks into the Auswaertiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office). He is seen removing his trenchcoat before security check. Subject 6 investigation terminated.

After some days, she didn’t feel the need to continue in the same way again, I mean, what is participation anyway, if it’s the same as tearing the sheet, sticking around to feed the birds or clicking——wordlessly——”add friend”. How engaged does one need to be to find intimacy, and what is participation in a group in which nobody notices? Taking part, you took part, again again… but what of inaction in the kinesphere, an allowance of space in regards to an other, not taking the responsibility. What can simply be, we were the worst at imagining a telos, so it just goes here to there nor there, our passivity is incremental. but why keep thinking of community and collectivity with such utopian ideals, anyhow. he asks, “can you imagine any form of positively created collectivity”? I thought of all my ill feeling; now, like a nearing in language or love, linking forward or a re-action may not require positives or negatives…

the street without glove

streetwithoutglove.jpg

today as i was cycling i passed over a small crumpled brown satin glove on the street, and, as i always do, thought of aka, about taking a photo of a glove on the street for her, as she always did, as she perhaps still does. but it’s a busy process, this taking of photos of lost gloves on streets, and at some point i stopped to do it anymore, because there are just so many lost gloves on streets around the world, and maybe they are quite even the most lost things in the world, beyond money and pets and love. f says that she always thinks of aka when she sees gloves, too. so we are consistently finding the lost things, and whether or not we take the picture, we keep losing and finding and losing again —- the thought. the money, the pets, the love.

and these thoughts happened within the space of about 50 meters, at which point i happened to ride right past the matching small brown satin glove, and though i didn’t stop, i slowed down a bit, thinking how this may be the first time in my life to see a whole pair lost, not quite together, but close. and maybe they weren’t lost, maybe the woman riding her bicycle could feel the spring as i do when i ride my bicycle these days, and she decided to fling her gloves away in joy. oh, the thought!

and so i couldn’t resist anymore, the chance to find and take a photo of a pair of lost brown satin gloves, so i slowed down more, turned around and started to go back to the place where i passed them. But just as i turned around, a man on a scooter slows down and swiftly picks up the small brown satin glove from the street and rides right past me.

so… the gloves and the money and the pets and the love.

sigh…

and a photograph for you.

frequency of journey: daily (more or less), duration: 20min, means of transport: bicycle

fl011.jpg out of the door, you turn right. the first store is the lawyer’s office, the danish couple (or maybe only he is danish) with the big white dog. they helped you when your car battery was flat last summer, but you haven’t seen them since september (did they move away?). next to them, the architects. you still can’t understand what that sign on the window means. they are there at all times, especially the guy with the glasses sitting at the end of the room, looking towards the window. you wonder if he ever sees you going by, more so when you go to the bakery in the early morning, wearing your coat over your pyjamas. you ride towards senefelderstrasse. multicolour fish made out of paper are still hanging on the trees since the kids made them during the neighborhood gathering in the summer. you arrive at the corner. on the right hand, the strange building that doesn’t look like a residential building but you swear you’ve seen someone behind that curtain. you wonder who lives here. on the left corner the new café. they’ve been working on it for so long and it just opened. you don’t like it at all. you turn left and ride all the way to danziger, past the greek grocery store, you wave to yorgos. you cross danziger and continue on kollwitzstrasse. this is your new route. till last month you used to take a right on danziger, but then she suggested that you try new routes, explore the area a bit more. they are still doing construction work and you turn right into sredzkistrasse. one café at each corner. he says he prefers the brunch at the northwest corner, but that’s only because of free coffee refill. you ride on sredzkistrasse, past the store that she is planning on buying (long-term plans..). you pass the kulturbrauerei on your right, cross schönhauser and then go right onto oderberger. the bar that you wanted to go and then you went, the night before she left. you turn left on kastanienallee. the constant fear of falling into the tram lines. horrible images passing in front of your eyes, every time. not so much looking around here, you have to be careful. you only notice that poster that looks a bit like him, as your father pointed out. you were embarrassed at the time, but now you think it actually does look like him, in a funny kind of way. then right on zionskirchstrasse. if it’s a thursday then the market will be there. veteranenstrasse, the fun part, riding down the hill, but you’re always a bit scared, keeping your hands on the brakes. you go past the park where you were planning to have that picnic. maybe you will in a few months, when the weather gets better again. you continue on invalidenstrasse. it’s your other neighborhood but you still feel like you haven’t explored it enough. you remember when you visited that may, before you moved here, the nordbahnhof seemed so different then and you had no idea that you would be returning to that same place only a few months later. past the nordbahnhof, the tricky part of crossing the road, you try a different approach each time depending on traffic. and then you cross. and then you are there. (click here to see more everyday routes and the points where they cross, overlap, run parallel or tangent to each other. and if you happen to be living in berlin, we’d love to read about your daily journey)
